Andrew Rosz Wins 2008 Top-Gun Singles Tennis Title!
On
an absolutely perfect evening for tennis on Wednesday, July 16, 2008,
finalists Andrew Rosz and Paul Newman met head to head in the final
round of the 2008 Top Gun Tennis Championships at West Wind.
Both players arrived early and at 6:30 PM sharp, the chair umpire
and linesmen took their seats and the match began.
In the first set, Andrew came out strong with a mindset of
hitting hard and blasting winners. Most of the rallies were close but nevertheless, Andrew
managed to win most of the points and took the first set from Paul 6-0.
The second set however was a totally different matter...
Paul raised his level of play considerably and both players held serve
up until 4-4. Paul then
broke Andrew’s serve to go up 5-4 with an opportunity to serve for the
second set. "I'm
really in trouble now" Andrew later commented since he had been
cramping in his right hand for the past three games.
But Andrew continued to fight and somehow managed to break back
to even things up at 5-5. Now
being only eight points away from the finish line, Andrew rallied back
and fought hard on each and every point and held serve to go up 6-5.
Paul then began to serve to stay alive in the match but he seemed
a little fatigued after the previous game and subsequently sprayed two
points wide to give Andrew a 15-30 lead.
On the next point, Andrew ripped an outright backhand up-the-line
winner to go up 15-40. Finally,
in the next (and last) point of the match, Paul hit a short ball and
Andrew ripped a forehand passing shot into the corner which was simply
too much for Paul to handle. And the match was over, and the 2008 Top Gun tennis final was
written into history. Andrew
Rosz defeats Paul Newman 6-0, 7-5.
Congratulations
to both players; Andrew Rosz seeded #1 and Paul Newman seeded #2.
You both put on a great show and we all look forward to having
you both back again next season.
